Exploring Common Urology Conditions and Treatments

Urology addresses disorders of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. The field covers a broad range of conditions, and it uses both surgical and nonsurgical approaches to care. Some conditions affect the kidneys and bladder, while others involve the prostate or reproductive organs, and treatment varies according to the diagnosis.

    Common Urology Conditions

Urology treats disorders that affect the kidneys, bladder, prostate and reproductive organs. Kidney stones and kidney cancer affect the kidneys, while bladder cancer and urinary incontinence affect the bladder. Some conditions appear at birth, including bladder exstrophy, hypospadias and epispadias, while others develop later in life and include erectile dysfunction and enlarged prostate. Varicocele and testicular cancer affect the male reproductive system, and elevated PSA levels relate to prostate health.

    Diagnostic and Screening Services

Diagnosis begins with an evaluation of symptoms and relevant test results. Screening and diagnostic services identify urologic conditions, and they help guide treatment. Bladder cancer screening is one diagnostic service, while elevated PSA is another area of urologic evaluation, and physicians use these findings when assessing prostate health. The findings provide information about the condition, and they help direct the next stage of care.

Treatment approaches range from targeted procedures to reconstructive surgery. Prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer have different treatment approaches, and enlarged prostate, also called BPH, has its own treatment options. Lower urinary tract reconstruction repairs the urinary tract, while fertility procedures address reproductive concerns. A no-scalpel office vasectomy provides another surgical option, and treatments for kidney stones and erectile dysfunction address those specific conditions.

    Minimally Invasive and Robotic Care

Minimally invasive techniques use small incisions and precise instruments. Robotic surgery supports these techniques, and it applies to a range of urologic procedures. These approaches offer several documented benefits, including less pain, less blood loss and less scarring, while they also reduce complications and support a faster return to normal daily activities. Minimally invasive surgical options provide the following benefits:

    • Significantly less pain
    • Less blood loss
    • Fewer complications
    • Less scarring
    • Faster return to normal daily activities

Not every condition requires a minimally invasive approach. A physician evaluates the condition, and the available techniques help determine the appropriate surgical method when minimally invasive care is an option. Robotic procedures apply to cancer of the upper urinary tract and kidney-sparing tumor removal, while other conditions require different surgical approaches. These techniques use smaller incisions, supporting less blood loss and less scarring. The approach also offers less pain and fewer complications, while patients may return to normal daily activities faster.

    Schedule a Urology Evaluation

Urology covers a wide range of conditions. Treatment options vary by diagnosis, and screening and diagnostic services provide information about the condition being evaluated. A urology evaluation connects symptoms with a diagnosis, while treatment may involve medication, procedures or surgery depending on the condition. A qualified urologist can evaluate the condition and discuss the treatment options that apply to the diagnosis. Call a specialist in your local area to learn more and begin your personalized healthcare journey.
