Understanding the Process of Getting Dental Crowns

A dental crown restoration is a treatment that places a custom-made cap over a damaged tooth. The crown covers the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline, restoring its shape, size, and appearance. Once fitted, a crown fits over the existing tooth structure to support daily functions like chewing and biting. Here’s more information on the process of getting dental crowns:

    When To Get One

Dentists recommend getting dental crowns in several situations. A crown may be discussed when a tooth has extensive decay that a standard filling cannot address, or when a tooth has cracked or broken. Crowns also protect a tooth that has undergone a root canal, as these teeth can become more fragile over time. Other cases that may need a crown restoration include:

    • To Cover a Dental Implant
    • To Support a Dental Bridge
    • To Improve Tooth Appearance

A dentist evaluates the condition of the tooth and surrounding structures before recommending this option.

    What To Expect

The dental crown process typically involves two appointments, though same-day options exist at some practices. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth and takes measurements. A temporary crown protects the tooth while a dental laboratory creates the permanent one. The second visit involves fitting and securing the final crown restoration.

Here is a step-by-step outline of what to expect during a standard dental crown restorative procedure:

    1. Examining and Preparing the Tooth: The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to check the roots and surrounding bone.
    2. Numbing the Area: A local anesthetic is applied to the tooth and nearby gum tissue.
    3. Shaping the Natural Tooth: The dentist reshapes the tooth by removing decay and trimming the outer surface to make room for the crown.
    4. Making Impressions: The dentist takes an impression or a digital scan of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth.
    5. Placing the Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until the permanent one is ready.
    6. Fabricating the Crown: The impression is sent to a dental laboratory, where technicians create the custom crown.
    7. Fitting the Restoration: At the second visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and checks the fit and color of the permanent crown.
    8. Cementing the Crown: The dentist bonds the permanent crown in place and adjusts the bite as needed.

Each step follows the previous one, so the full process usually spans two to three weeks between appointments.

    What Recovery Is Like

Recovery after a dental crown procedure is generally straightforward, but the gum tissue around the crown may feel tender for a short period. Some people notice sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures in the days following the placement; this often eases as the tooth adjusts. During recovery, patients are usually advised to avoid very hard or sticky foods until the area settles. Brushing twice a day and flossing around the crown helps keep the area clean and supports the health of the surrounding gums.

If you have a temporary crown between visits, eat carefully to help prevent it from loosening. Any persistent discomfort, an uneven bite, or a loose crown should be reported to the dental office, since a dentist can make quick adjustments to address these issues. Most daily activities can continue without interruption after the procedure. Following the dentist’s guidance during this period supports the longevity of the restoration.

    Get Timely Dental Crowns

To effectively maintain the function and structure of your smile, address any damaged or weakened teeth quickly. A dental crown is a durable way to restore a tooth that is decayed, cracked, or has undergone a root canal. Scheduling an evaluation with a dentist allows you to learn whether a crown is appropriate for your situation and what the process will entail. Contact a dental professional to discuss your options and take the next step toward restoring your tooth.
